Why You Should Choose Natural Oils Over Skincare Products?

In this already toxic world where we are consuming, absorbing, and inhaling all kinds of toxins from all directions, women are exposed to more chemicals than men because they use more cosmetic and skincare products. Natural oils, as a replacement to skincare products, are becoming increasingly popular all over the world because of increasing awareness, as most people now prefer going back to the basics when it comes to caring for their largest organ. Natural oils are known and preferred for their high nutritional value, restorative nature, wound-healing property, and potent anti-aging benefits. Plant-based oils are proven to help strengthen the skin tissues against environmental factors and boost skin health, especially after long-term use. Let’s have a closer look and dig deeper into some potential benefits of natural oils over skincare products.

AWAY FROM TOXICITY

AWAY FROM TOXICITY

Most creams and lotions contain parabens (as preservatives), phthalates, or other synthetic chemicals that may have endocrine-disrupting properties. When these chemicals are absorbed into the skin, they disturb the hormonal balance in the body by interfering with the working of the endocrine system. And since hormones are responsible for so many functions in the body, these chemicals may have adverse effects on psychological and reproductive health, especially those related to mood, sleep, and fertility. In a recent study published in May 2020, exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals in personal care products (including paraben) was linked with rising female infertility. The study was conducted on U.S female population in the reproductive age group of 18-45. The data available with the Environmental Working Group also suggests the endocrine-disrupting activity of parabens. Going for the label “paraben-free” is no help either because then there are other kinds of preservatives about which we have insufficient research. After all, there was a time when paraben was considered safe; its toxicity came to light only after it was detected in breast cancer patients.

Deep Nourishment

Deep Nourishment

Unlike commercial moisturizers that rely on supplying some water and then a greasy substance to hold it, natural oils penetrate into deeper layers of the skin. Moisturizers are not absorbed by the skin; they just sit on the topmost layer to prevent water loss. While this may benefit dry skin to some extent, their inability to provide additional nourishment and their chemical ingredients negate any beneficial effect they might have on the skin. Natural oils, on the other hand, are rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids, which the skin can readily absorb. Research shows that constituents of natural oils are integrated into the skin barrier, delivering most of the antioxidants and fatty acids directly to tissues. Even paraffin oil, which also sits on the topmost layer to prevent water loss, was found ten times more effective in locking moisture than most creams and lotions. Natural oils are superior to paraffin oil in many ways; however, they are most effective when applied after washing the face as the skin still has some moisture.

Replacing your night cream with natural oils is a great way to reduce and prevent early signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, under-eye puffiness, and signs of UV damage. Natural oils are rich in triglycerides, flavonoids, carotenoids, terpenes, phenolic compounds, phytosterols, tocopherols, and other antioxidant compounds that boost the elasticity of the skin and promote skin barrier homeostasis. Regular, consistent use repairs the skin barrier and helps maintain the excellence of tissues. Their antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory properties help reduce breakouts and soothe skin irritations. Besides, the potency of natural oils can always be enhanced by adding a few drops of essential oils. A 2018 study provided a detailed analysis of 19 natural oils with all their therapeutic benefits and mechanisms of action.

Natural oils are a wonderful way to protect, rejuvenate, replenish, and pamper your skin with loads of love and nourishment. Their suitability might vary with different kinds of skin, but the good news is – there are so many oils that nature has something to offer for everyone. However, always use 100% pure, organic, cold-pressed oils for reaping all their benefits.
